Calcium formate (I) is produced by reacting methyl formate and calcium hydroxide, in mole ratio of 2:1, in aq. suspension at 20-100 deg.C. The wt. ratio of calcium hydroxide to water at the start of the reaction is 1:1 to 1:5. Before or after distilling off the methanol formed, the crystalline (I) is sepd. from the aq. phase, and dried. Pref. an aq. calcium hydroxide suspension is used which contains 20-35 wt. % calcium hydroxide. Pref. the reaction is conducted in the presence of a calcium hydroxide excess of up to 5 mol. % and, after completing the reaction, the pH value is adjusted to 5-7 by adding formic acid. USE/ADVANTAGE - The process can be performed at high space-time yields, and provides calcium formate quality which is acceptable as feed additive for animals.
