MATERIAL LIFTING APPARATUS

A beam or material lifting apparatus is disclosed for lifting a palleted assembly of cargo, bales of paper, sides of beef, drums or the like. The apparatus is suitable for lifting material by helicopter and includes a box section member (10) which supports a number of pairs of retaining blocks (18 and 19) within each of which a pair of plungers (20 and 21) slide so as to retain pallet slings (39) or the like. The beam is raised by means of chains (16). The pallet slings are temporarily held in place before the beam is raised by manually sliding the holding plungers (20) between the retaining blocks. When the beam is lifted a cable (38) is tensioned to raise a lever (35), thereby actuating gear wheel (31), pinion (30), connecting rods (28) and arms (25 and 26) to cause the locking plungers (21) to displace holding plungers (20). After the beam is lowered a retensioning of the cable (38) effects retraction of the locking plungers to release the pallet slings.
