Systems for navigating moving bodies, particularly systems based on the detection of rotating beams of radiation, often require complex or expensive equipment, such as a number of laser modules or a specially laid floor over which the body can move. The invention overcomes this requirement by providing a navigation system, and a method of navigating a body in which two beams of the same frequency, rotating at equal and opposite angular velocities and distinguishable in form, are produced by a single radiation source and detected by at least three spaced apart sensors on the body being navigated. The outputs of the sensors are used to calculate the angular and radial position of the body relative to the radiation source. The invention is of particular use in navigating moving cameras, for instance on a studio set. |
