A navigation system is connected to a receiver for receiving and evaluating traffic information. The receiver transmits the traffic information to the navigation system, which determines a route from the position to a destination as a function of the load on the sections as indicated by the traffic information. This permits traffic-dependent navigation. The reason for not choosing the usual route is indicated by reading out the corresponding traffic information and displaying it to the driver of the vehicle.
