PURPOSE: To prepare the activated carbon adsorbent useful for adsorbing and removing mercury from liquid hydrocarbons by impregnating and adsorbing an activated carbon with 0.5-25 wt.% of a halogenide selected from the I-, Br- and Cl-compounds of metals. CONSTITUTION: The activated carbon adsorbent impregnated with 0.5-25 wt.% of at least one halogenide is prepared by impregnating an activated carbon with at least one metal halogenide selected from halogenides comprising I, Br and Cl. Metals capable of forming mercury amalgams, such as Ag, Sn, Zn, Al, Au or Cu are suitable as the impregnating metals. Further, an adsorbent capable of removing organic bound mercury is prepared by impregnating an activated carbon with 0.5-25 wt. % of at least one metal halogenide selected from the halogenides of Sn, Ti and Cu which are reducing agents. The hydrocarbon containing an organic bound mercury is brought into contact with the activated carbon adsorbent mentioned above to reduce the organic bound mercury to mercury element, and the formed mercury is adsorbed as amalgam by the adsorbent and can be removed. |
