ACTIVE MATRIX SUBSTRATE AND LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY DEVICE

PURPOSE:To obviate the degradation in the opening rate of the active matrix substrate with an increase in picture element density by providing picture element electrodes in the upper part of an insulating layer provided to cover switching elements and electrically connecting these electrodes to the switching elements. CONSTITUTION:The picture element electrodes 9 are provided in the upper part of the insulating layer 10 provided to cover TFTs and are electrically connected to the drain electrodes 8 of the TFTs by contact holes 11 provided in the insulating layer 10. Since signal wires 7 and the picture element electrodes 9 are formed to different levels via the insulating layer 10, there is no need for providing the spacing necessary for electrically separating the signal lines 7 and the picture element electrodes 9. The opening rate which is the most important problem with the active matrix with the increase in the picture element density is greatly increased in this way.
