The setting cylinder comprises a cylinder (1) a piston (2) a piston or connecting rod (3) and an adjustment measuring device (4). The latter is equipped with a spindle (5) of a certain pitch and with a rotating potentiometer (6) of a certain travel, fitted in the crown of the piston. A friction wheel gear arrangement is mounted between the spindle and the potentiometer to act as a friction coupling, matching the pitch of the spindle to the travel of the potentiometer. The spindle is driven according to the relative movement between the cylinder and the piston by the insertion of a nut (8). The friction wheel gear (9) is fitted in the head (10) of the cylinder and the potentiometer on a spring-loaded swinging arm, turning about an axis parallel to the axis of the spindle.
