The mast signal (10,15) is switched on and off by an electrical switch (8), which is operated automatically in dependence on the position of the mast (2) relative to the horizontal, via a position sensor (9). The mast (2) and/or the attached sail supports a communication device operated via a further switch (13). The operation of the two switches (8,13) is linked so that the mast signal (10,15) is switched off and the communication device is switched on when the mast (2) is approximately vertical and vice versa when the mast (2) is approximately horizontal.
