PURPOSE:To handle many kinds of passbooks having magnetic stripes in a lateral or a longitudinal direction by a single apparatus by providing a means for moving a magnetic head at right angles to a transferring direction of the passbooks, and a means for turning the magnetic head at right angles at an optional position of the moving means. CONSTITUTION:When a host computer 1 finds that a passbook 3 or the like has a magnetic stripe 15 in a lateral direction, the transfer of the passbook is stopped in accordance with an instruction from a control part 2 when the magnetic stripe 15 comes to the position of a magnetic head 4. The magnetic head 4 moves together with a carrier 8 on a guide shaft 7, reading the contents of the magnetic stripe 15 or writing information into the magnetic stripe. Mean while, when the host computer 1 finds that the passbook 3 has a magnetic stripe 16 in a longitudinal direction, the magnetic head 4 is turned in a direction (c) together with the carrier 8 to be a magnetic head in the longitudinal direc tion. Then, the magnetic head 4 moves on the guide shaft 7 to be positioned at the head of the magnetic stripe 16, reading or writing information in synchro nization with the movement of the passbook 3 in a direction (b) by the operation of a roller 6. |
