This invention relates to a method for detecting a thrust force acting on the main spindle of a machine tool and its object is to detect accurately the thrust force by eliminating influences of restistance of a main spindle feeder. To attain this object a pressure gauge (25) is interposed between thrust bearings (16, 17) of a main spindle (12) and a main spindle support section (20) and another pressure gauge (26) is interposed between the main spindle support section (20) and a frame (15). Said pressure gauge is, for example, one using a piezoelectric film.
