A surface (1) bearing markings or indicia, such as a street sign or an advertising board, is illuminated by means of an elongate tubular light bulb which is mounted relative to the surface so that it extends in a direction away from the surface, and so that light emitted from the bulb is cast onto the surface. The light bulb is located in an elongate housing (7) which has a first portion (9) extending in a direction generally perpendicular to the surface (1), and a second portion (11) which is inclined to the first portion. <IMAGE>
