<p>PURPOSE: To surely retain carbon particles by first allowing the carbon particles to carry electric charge of a same polarity at a first operation zone and subsequently filtering the charged carbon particles in a filter carrying the electric charge of opposite polarity. CONSTITUTION: When carbon particles having an electrically different polarity, which have been emitted from the combustion of internal combustion engines are filtered, the carbon particles 1 are allowed to carry the electric charge of same polarity at a first operation zone, e.g. in a filter 5 or in a corona zone 6. Subsequently, the charged carbon particles are filtered in more than one of a filter 3 which carries the electric charge of opposite polarity. Thereby, the separated carbon particles can surely be retained even in the case that a temp. and/or a flow rate are markedly changed for a period of accumulation of the separated carbon.</p> |
