PURPOSE:To obtain the catalyst with its heat resistance improved and capable of controlling the liberation of hydrogen sulfide by providing a coating layer consisting of cerium oxide particles in which barium is fixed, activated alumina particles and a noble metal component on the surface of a catalyst carrier. CONSTITUTION:The first coating layer 3 consisting essentially of activated alumina and with a noble metal catalytic component such as platinum and palladium dispersed in the alumina is provided on the surface of the catalyst carrier 2 of a ceramic such as cordierite. The second coating layer 4 contg. cerium oxide, activated alumina and palladium is furnished on the surface of the layer 3, and further barium, lanthanum, etc., are fixed in the cerium oxide particles. Consequently, the thermal deterioration of cerium oxide is prevented, the heat resistance of the catalyst is improved, and the liberation of hydrogen sulfide into the atmosphere is controlled. |
