PURPOSE: To increase the encoding gain of a transmitter which transmits data signals by providing a means which encodes information into grid codes and a means which processes the encoded information by using a generalized partial response signal method. CONSTITUTION: First encoding processing is composed of grid encoding processing 114, and second encoding processing and its related nonlinear signal processing are a generalized partial respond signal method (GPRS) used for compensating the undesirable effect of a noise whitening device. A generalized partial response pre-encoder(GPRP) 179 prevents the introduction of interference between symbols to a received signal by executing the pre-encoding of the GPRS. Therefore, when white noise exists, the encoding gain which is realized with a prescribed code that gives an encoding gain when the white noise exists is increased for the code.
