Trimmer/cutter which thins using rotating chains and is suitable for thinning and cleaning/thinning timber of small diameter. The chains (Figure 1, part 4) rotate about both axes 3 and 5 (A and A') in the direction of movement B of the timber 7. In its simplest version, the device is coupled to the three-point coupling of a tractor and the transmission is effected using a standard cardan shaft from the tractor's output shaft to the shaft 10, from which the gearwheel 14 and the chain 13 transmit the rotational movement to toothed main drums 10 and 11 whose transmission power is increased by the pressure drums 8 and 9. By way of the gearwheel 1 and the chain 2 on the shaft 16, the rotational movement is transmitted equally to the chain shafts 5 and 3. The shaft 16 or another of the transmission shafts is provided with a spring-loaded, known brake which in emergencies can be triggered by means of a suitable coupling, and through which the cardan shaft brake is used so that the cardan shaft's friction brake begins to slip and the device stops immediately. In the gearwheel 1 or shafts 3 and 5 there are free wheels which permit free rotation of the chains 4 even if the main drums 10 and 11 are stationary. The cutting saw 12 and the stop coupling and brake combination 127 are controlled in a known manner such that the device is allowed to cut the timber 7, which is to be thinned, to the desired length. If hydraulically driven, the trimmer/cutter can also be arranged outside the tractor, preferably in the front part of a trailer with pivotable bar. <IMAGE>
