The shoes (56) enclose a projectile (10) and transmit some of the force exerted by gases on firing to its forward part. They detach from the projectile after the latter emerges from the gun barrel, etc. They can have portions fitting in mating ones in the projectile, typically flanges (60) engaging in grooves. Fracture grooves can be formed so that they break off into two or more parts. |
