A gellable aqueous composition with retarded gelling time contains a first water-soluble organic polymer which can be cross-linked with chromium ions and a cross- linking/retardant agent comprising a chromium glycolate complex and free glycolic acid [Cr(glycolate)3.n glycolic acid, where n can vary between 1 and 150]. The composition is economically advantageous, permits long gelling times even at high temperatures and produces gels having improved stability in the presence of divalent metal ions, in particular calcium and magnesium ions. |
