PURPOSE:To obtain a new lubricating oil suitable as gear base oil, lubricating oil for use in rubber, high-viscosity traction oil, etc., by hydrogenating a specific fraction of a reaction product formed by reaction between biphenyl and a benzyl halide. CONSTITUTION:Preferably, a reaction is made between (A) 1 pt.wt. of a benzyl halide, (B) 1-4 pts.wt. of biphenyl, (C) 0-0.5 pts.wt. of nitrobenzene, and (D) 0.01-0.15 pts.wt. of aluminum chloride at ca.80 deg.C for ca.2-10hr. After removal of the catalyst from the reaction product, fractions other than benzyl biphenyl are separated by e.g. distillation and the remaining fraction is hydrogenated at ca.220 deg.C under a hydrogen pressure of ca.50kg/cm<2>.G using pref. a nickel catalyst, thus obtaining the objective lubricating oil. The use of the present oil is, other than those mentioned above, e.g. lubricating oil for gear coupling, lubricating oil for chain coupling materials. |
