A sample cell for use in the qualitative or quantitative determination of an analyte comprises a transparent block (71) which accommodates a resonant optical biosensor (72, 73, 74). Optical coupling means are formed integrally in the block (71). The optical coupling means is preferably a prism. The sample cell is preferably a disposable unit used in association with an apparatus comprising a light source and suitable detection means.
