This invention relates to an inorganic membrane comprising a coarsely-porous body having pores filed with a finely-porous or extremely finely-porous material over a pore length shorter than the thickness of the porous body. The invention also relates to a method of making an inorganic membrane. The method is characterized in that a finely-porous layer is applied within a coarsely-porous layer by applying an accurately metered quantity of gelable liquid present on a liquid that is immiscible or poorly miscible with water and/or alcohol within said coarsely-porous layer, and subsequently completing the gelling process.
