In heat treatment of metal workpieces in a vacuum furnace by heating the workpieces up and quenching them in a cooling gas at elevated pressure, with gas circulation, the cooling gas used is He, H2, mixtures of these gases, or mixtures of He and/or H2 with up to 30 vol.% inert gas. Gas pressure in the furnace is adjusted to 1-4, pref. 1.4-3.0 Mpa and gas speed is selected so that the product of pressure and speed is between 10 and 250 m.MPa.sec-1. Gas circulation is carried out by a fan.
