A water-filled coupling cushion for contactless lithotripsy with water temp. monitoring provides fail-safe temp. limiting for an electrical liquid heater. It contains a temp. sensor (4) with a tester which conducts a test cycle in a few seconds and at time intervals shorter than the time taken to heat the liquid to a defined temp. The heater (26) is switched off when a test cycle reveals that the temp. sensor is defective. USE/ADVANTAGE - Also for use in medicinal baths, the temp. sensor monitoring arrangement ensures that cushion temp. is maintained within narrow limits and does not exceed 41 deg.C.
