PURPOSE:To allow the periodic execution of life management by recording the information on the date when a life inspection and maintenance is needed to be executed by a means which can be optically read out in a part of a recording region or non-recording region. CONSTITUTION:The information on the date when the life inspection and maintenance need be executed is recorded in a part of the recording region 2 or non- recording region by a means which can be optically read out. Namely, the date information is read out before a user executes the recording/reproducing operations of ordinary information in a user region 3 and the user is known by a display that the day of use is the date when the life inspection and the maintenance are to be executed; otherwise, the drive itself can make judgment as to whether the day of use exceeds the date when the life inspection and the maintenance are to be executed. The life management of the optical recording medium is periodically executed in this way and the loss of the valuable information is prevented.
