PURPOSE:To obtain a hydrogen storage electrode whose oxidation resistance is enhanced and a long-life nickel-hydrogen battery by providing an alkali resistant metal layer on a hydrogen storage alloy by means of arc plasma deposition. CONSTITUTION:Mm (misch metal: a mixture of rare earth elements), Ni, Al, and Co are weighed in respective predetermined amounts and are melted several times in an Ar atmosphere in an arc melting furnace to form an alloy ingot of uniform quality expressed as MmNi4.2Al0.3Co0.5. The alloy ingot is mechanically crushed and is sifted to obtain alloy powder passed through 300 mesh and then the alloy powder is used as a base and a metal layer of alkali resistant copper is deposited on the surface of the alloy powder by an arc plasma device having copper as electrodes, in this case the alloy powder base is held at room temperature and the thickness of the deposited layer is 1 to 3mu. Thereby a hydrogen storage electrode whose oxidation resistance is enhanced and a long- life nickel-hydrogen battery are obtained. |
