A heat insulating material is produced by adding an (in) organic water-soluble binder to a paper sludge containing pulp fiber, lignin and filler, firing the mixt. in the rotary kiln at 300-800 deg.C, and molding it. The molded material has at least 5 wt.% carbon, at most 0.5 spurious specific gravity and at most 20 mm particle diameter. The organic binder is pref. dextrin, lignin sulfonic acid or polyvinyl alcohol, the inorganic binder is pref. clay, bentonite or silica sol. The insulating material is used for preventing cooling and oxidization of a molten metal.
