The device is intended to supply polarised-light illumination with a single polarisation characteristic. A beam (FO) of natural light, and therefore non-polarised, is split into two secondary beams (F1, F2) of the same intensity but each polarised with a different polarisation by means of a splitter-polariser (1). The polarisation of at least one of the two secondary beams is modified with the aid of a rotary polariser (3) so that the two secondary beams have the same polarisation characteristics and can form a single beam polarised with the same polarisation. Application to display equipment, in particular to image projectors using polarised-light optical valves employed, for example, for liquid-crystal collimated display, for the projection of images onto screens and for high-definition television. <IMAGE>
