In prepn. of printing inks, the ingredients are passed directly, or after premixing into an extruder with one or more, pref. twin, screws for producing a homogenised extrudate. The extrudate is chilled while being transferred by one or more conveyor belts to a pulverising mill. The resulting powder is fractionated to remove and trap excessively fine particles and recycle oversize ones and the required particle size range is either packaged as a dry powdered ink or compounded with appropriate waxes and/or fluids to produce inks for use as pastes or liquids. USE/ADVANTAGE - For continuous prodn. of inks for use as solids (e.g. xerography or electrostatic printing) as pastes or liquids (e.g. for offset printing), esp. for an integrated process with on-line mixing. Inks prepared using screw homogenisation are found to exhibit relatively high gloss and colour intensity. Typically the particle size distribution (after fractionation) is 0.1-50 micro m. |
