Household and domestic waste of mixed solutions, e.g. old cars, is reduced, if necessary after cutting and crushing, to a fraction of its original bulk, and packed under pressure into one or more containers to undergo low temp./pressure pyrolysis. With no intermediate stops, the waste then undergoes high temp. pyrolysis. Resulting noxious substances (solid, liq. or gaseous) then pass through a high temp. furnacee operating at 1500 deg.C or more, or through a succession of molten baths, differing in temp. and/or compsn., with bath temp. decreasing from bath to bath to ensure min. energy consumption. The final prods. are harmless low molecular wt. components, e.g. water vapour and CO2. Residual metallic or mineral prods. are separately processed. Initial pyrolysis takes place in an elongated tuned furnace.
