PURPOSE:To improve the light emission efficiency of the gas discharge display element by using an AC pulse voltage consisting of pulses with width which is shorter than the time required for a discharging current to converge in one pulse voltage impressing time and pulses with longer width as an AC pulse voltage to be impressed to an electrode couple for the continuation of discharging. CONSTITUTION:The AC pulse voltage impressed to the electrode couple for the continuous discharging consists of the pulses with width shorter than the time required for the discharging current to converge in one pulse voltage impressing time and pulse with longer width. Consequently, the ultraviolet light emission efficiency of the gas discharge display element is improved without causing a rise in driving voltage nor the instability of driving, and the efficiency of a color gas discharging display element which uses a fluorescent material is improved.
