The invention relates to a process for the production of preformed material for workpieces, preferably tools, in particular of high-speed steel, having a high proportion of metal compounds. To achieve good hot workability in conjunction with a high proportion of metal compounds in the material and to improve the hardenability of the workpieces produced therefrom and having good mechanical properties, the process is characterised by the division of a liquid melt into individual particles and the formation of a metal spray stream into which powder consisting of high-melting metal compounds and/or containing said compounds is passed and is applied with the individual particles to a substrate and allowed to solidify, and the body obtained is subjected to hot isostatic pressing and/or hot working.
