A movable member positioning apparatus comprises a reciprocally movable member (1,2); a drive means (5,6) for reciprocally shifting said movable member between a reference position and an operative position; a detection means (7,8) for detecting the fact that the movable member is situated in the proximity of the reference position; a counting means (11) for counting a shifting amount of the movable member while the detection means is detecting the movable member when the movable member is shifting from the reference position to the operative position; and a control means (9) for storing a counted value counted by the counting means and for controlling the stop of the drive means on the basis of the counted value when the movable member is returned to the reference position and stopped there.
