Diesters of 2,2'-(1,4-phenylene-bis-(oxy)) bis-ethanol of formula (1) are prepd. in an azeotropic systems with a 20-50% excess of 3-6C C8 and C10 aliphatic acids and respectively; branched chain acids as 5C-iso, 2-4C(2-ethyl-butynic), 2-6C(2 ethyl-hexanoic) acids, 1-3% catalyst-acid is chosen from benzene-sulphonic-, p-toluene-sulphonic- or sulphuric-acids. The azeotropic entraining component of benzene, toluene or xylene is used in single to double molar equivalent based on the diols used. Components are refluxed for 1.5-3 hrs. Solids contg. suspensions are filtered. The azeotropic.solvent and excess alcohol are removed by vacuum distillation. The prod. is washed with an alkaline soln. followed by demineralised water.
