A downward burning solid fuel is prepared by (1) molding 3 major parts (ignition part firing part, burning trunk) combined in order from the top, each containing carbonaceous material (100 parts char), combustion promoter and adhesive (starch, molasses or CMC), (2) spraying a water-blended mixture of 60 parts calcium carbonate and 40 parts white dextrin on the surface of molded body, and (3) drying it to form a white coated film on the surface. The ignition part contains 40-50 parts barium nitrate, 5- 7 parts potassium nitrate, 0.15-0.2 parts iron sulfide, 0.15-0.2 parts alum, and 0.1-0.2 parts zeolite as combustion promoter.
