PURPOSE:To prevent phosphorus acid from leaking without giving mechanical damage to a matrix during several years of storage by holding a phosphorus acid fuel cell at an atmospheric temperature of 15 deg.C or lower to freeze phosphorus acid. CONSTITUTION:A phosphorus acid fuel cell is composed of a laminated body of single cells 1, which comprise a matrix 2 composed of a porous silicon carbite material and containing polytetrafluoroethylene in a range of 10wt.% to 25wt.%, oxidant electrodes 3 for interposing the matrix and fuel electrodes 4. This phosphorus acid fuel cell is maintained at a temperature of 15 deg.C or lower to have phosphorus acid 2A contained in the matrix 2 frozen as well as content of polytetrafluoroethylene PTFE in the matrix 2 is increased to 10 to 25wt.% to form a network structure. Therefore structural destruction of the matrix 2 can be avoided by making the PTFE in the matrix 2 a network structure. Thus permeation of the phosphorus acid 2A into an electrode base can be completely prevented as well as attributes such as corrosiveness and hygroscopic property of the phosphorus acid 2A drop so that the fuel cell 1 can be stored in a more stable conditions chemically and physically. |
