Process in which a component made of wood or the like is impregnated in bulk with a view to stabilising its dimensions and to reduce its porosity and its water absorptivity. In a closed first vessel the component is degassed under vacuum while it is immersed in an impregnating liquid containing at least one monomer and an initiator. The component is next drained and then placed in a closed second vessel where it is heated to initiate the polymerisation. During the latter the component remains in contact with the vapour which it releases, and this prevents a discharge of impregnating liquid. The second vessel remains substantially at atmospheric pressure. The preferred monomers are diallyl phthalate, pure styrene or a mixture of both. A polyester resin and/or a solvent may be added to them. This process can be applied to any component or any assembled article made of wood or of other porous materials.
