This breather device comprises a venting orifice (9) under which is mounted a valve (10). The latter comprises, in a perforated cylindrical reinforcing member (13), a shutter (14), a main float (16) and an auxiliary float (17). The main float is designed to raise the shutter at the end of filling the tank, then to allow fuel to penetrate into its internal space in order to make it heavy enough to drop back down thereby causing the shutter to open the said orifice (9), its descent being limited by a stop (22). The auxiliary float (17), situated under this stop, closes off a discharge opening (26) of the main float for as long as the fuel is above a given low level. <IMAGE>
