A starch-based, corrugating binding agent, which brings about a controlled increase in the degree of viscosity and formation of a green bond and which contains water, starch, caustic alkali, a source of active boron and polyvinyl alcohol having an intermediate degree of hydrolysis (approx. 92-98%), with the polyvinyl alcohol constituent giving rise to a defined increase in the degree of viscosity on formation of the binding agent, in which the increase in the degree of viscosity is controlled for bringing about an effective green bond and a final bond on a corrugated cardboard surface.
