System for coding of digital signals arranged in information blocks, comprising a source coder followed by a transmission channel coder, and in which, when the source coder is a variable-length coding chain particularly including a data rate regulation circuit, the channel coder comprises, in series, on the one hand, a subassembly for coding without selective protection and, on the other hand, a subassembly for coding with selective protection, itself comprising: (A) a block length coding stage, designed to determine, along a block, a cumulative length of code words output by the said source coder and to carry out the coding of the block lengths thus determined; (B) a stage of selective protection of the said information blocks; (C) a stage for multiplexing the signals output by the said length coding stages and for selective protection.
