[Also in Group XXVIII] Apparatus for filling battery casings 11 with the electrolyte comprises means for discharging the electrolyte from a chamber 24 (see Group XXVIII) into a U-shaped channel 22 from whence it discharges into the casing 11 through orifices 19, 20. Each orifice is provided with a valve 48 which prevents the formation of an electrolyte bridge between the cells, each casing being provided with a vent 16. A plurality of casings may be radially arranged around the chamber 24. Where the battery is to be used at any angular position each casing 11 is provided with a plurality of vents such as 216a, 216b which comprise balls 252a loaded by springs 253a which are not strong enough to overcome the gravity effect on the ball when the vent is in the upper position. In a modification the casings 11 may initially contain an inert liquid of low wetting power, e.g. silicon oil having a specific gravity similar to that of the electrolyte, which is displaced by the incoming electrolyte. The cells may, for example, comprise negative plates containing metallic zinc, positive plates containing silver peroxide with paper inter-electrode spacers and the electrolyte, potassium hydroxide. |
