<p>PURPOSE: To obtain the subject emulsion binder comprising a filler and a specific latex binder and exhibiting excellent fiber adhesivity and improving a property for binding dry and wet tufts, when applied to carpets. CONSTITUTION: This composition for coating carpets comprises (A) 30-80 wt.% of a filler (for example, clay or calcium carbonate) and (B) 70-20 wt.% of a latex binder comprising an emulsion which is obtained by the emulsion polymerization of 40-80 wt.% of a 1-3C alkanoic acid vinyl ester, preferably vinyl acetate, 5-25 wt.% of a copolymerizable comonomer having a glass transition point Tg of at least 50 deg.C and selected from methyl methacrylate, styrene, dimethyl maleate, t-butyl methacrylate, and the like, 10-30 wt.% of ethylene, and further a functional comonomer such as monoethyl, monobutyl or monooctyl octylate. A carpet backed with the composition has an excellent tuft-binding property, and exhibits excellent combustion retardancy and low smoke density.</p> |
