The linear drive for adjusting a vehicle wing mirror uses an e.m. coil (33) attached to one of the relatively movable components (3) and a permanent magnet armature (38) attached to the second component (20). A control device regulates the electrical energy supplied to the drive to obtain a defined linear movement path. The movement initiated by the coil can be clamped by supplying a braking pulse for each pulse supplied to obtain movement in a given direction. ADVANTAGE - Low mfg. and installation cost.
