Gas generator for inflation of a protective bag in an impact protection system for vehicle occupants has a moulded propellant body (1) located in a ring-shaped combustion chamber which extends through a central tube in which a detonating unit is located. The propellant body has a central opening (7) and has notches (9-15) round the periphery which cause it to break up into several parts on firing. ADVANTAGE - Initial phase of inflation does not produce large pressure gradients.
