PURPOSE:To offer the optical multiplexing and branching device which is easily manufactured and has low loss by forming a total reflecting mirror on one side wall of a signal optical waveguide and shifting the optical axes of an input waveguide and an output waveguide for light from each other. CONSTITUTION:The center of the optical axis of a signal optical waveguide 6a shifts from the center of the optical axis of a signal optical waveguide 5 toward a signal optical waveguide 6a and is aligned with the center of a part where signal light passes. Further, the center of the optical axis of the signal optical waveguide 6b whose optical path is converted through the total reflecting mirror 9 also shifts from the center of the optical axis of the signal optical waveguide 5 toward the total reflecting mirror 9 and is aligned with the center of the total reflecting mirror 9 of the signal light. Consequently, only the parts of waveguide light beams of the signal optical waveguide 6a and signal optical waveguides 6b where the photoelectric field intensity is largest are coupled with the signal optical waveguide 5 and the coupling efficiency is improved. |
