<p>Disclosed is a heart valve of the pivotal bi-leaflet or single occluder type having improved washing characteristics in the region of the support arrangement. The leaflets (14) include cylindrical, or other circular cross-sectional, pivot enlargements (40) at opposite lateral edges of the leaflets and the valve body (12) includes a number of projections (24a-24b) extending inward from its sidewall. The projections create sockets which encircle the pivot enlargements, confining leaflet movement to substantially pivotal rotation between open and closed positions. The projections are spaced from one another to define channels (52ab-52da) between adjacent projections through which some blood flows both when the valve is in the open position and in the closed position to thereby provide blood flow past the lateral edge surfaces in the regions of the pivot enlargements, minimizing stagnation therein. The enlargements can be relieved immediately radially inward of the leaflet edges to permit blood acess therealong.</p> |
