The portal frame is for use in ship building and similar construction work. It consists of two uprights (2) which have their upper ends connected by two beams (3) which are inclined at a small angle to the horizontal. The uprights (2) and beams (3) have I shaped cross-sections and are made from sheet steel. The edges of the flanges of these sections are reinforced by bending over the edges at right angles. A rectangular plate (7) is welded to the inner ends of the beams (3) to enable them to be bolted together. A similar plate is welded to the upper end of each upright to enable it to be bolted to the outer end of each beam (3) by meanwsIs a second plate welded to the beam.
