Waste liq. contaminated in a mfg. process esp. by particles such as those derived from metal deburring which do not greatly exceed the density of the entraining medium, arrives in a collector tank to be pumped into an adjacent settlement tank entering via a floor-level aperture. After sufficient time for particle settlement, liq. from the latter tank overflows into an extn. compartment form which treated liq. can be returned to the process. Should extra process liq. be needed or the amt. arriving in the extn. compartment be insufficient, the settlement tank (22) may be by-passed and liq. returned to the collector tank for recycling. The interconnected array of compartments may be further subdivided and include level controllers directing liq. in the most favourable direction, i.e. into a compartment with spere capacity. ADVANTAGE - Esp. with discontinuous delivery of waste liq. the settlement system operates effectively from small vol.
