A method of compressing and decompressing data defining, in the spatial or frequency domain respectively, blocks of pixels of an image in which the data is transferred into the frequency or spatial domain comprises applying a function to the data. The applied function is a dither function (17), applied to the data in either the spatial or frequency domain during decompression.
