Polyhydantoins useful in coating materials, films, adhesives and moldings are prepared by reacting polyfunctional alpha -aminocarboxylic acids, organic polyiso(thio)cyanates and carboxylic acid compounds in the presence of a condensed aromatic hydrocarbon at a temperature of 0 DEG to 500 DEG C.
