Fuel supply to the engine cylinders 12 can be stopped at no and low partial load. Exhaust-driven turbochargers 16, 17 are designed to be cut in and out by opening and closing exhaust gas shut-off devices 27 and 28 and the engine operates with overlapping cylinder inlet and outlet opening times. Exhaust-driven turbocharger 18 is permanently cut in and its exhaust-gas supply duct 33 has an exhaust-gas restricting device 34 which has a shut-off valve (35, Fig.2), with an orifice (36), which can be brought automatically into the open position against a spring (38) by the flow of exhaust gas. An exhaust back pressure occurs in the exhaust manifold 14 common to all cylinders 11, 12 due to the exhaust restricting device 34. In conjunction with the overlapping opening times of cylinder inlet and outlet, an exhaust backflow occurs from the exhaust manifold 14 into the cylinders 12 cut off from the fuel supply to maintain their temperature. <IMAGE> |
