A method for producing inflatable elements (13) or cushions for the protective immobilization of various objects and for filling up spaces formed between the objects and a container. The method is characterized in that it involves using a weldable air-tight flexible plastic sleeve having a width which is greater than required to allow for deformation when inflated, welding (5) the free end of said sleeve, placing a desired length of sleeve between at least two fill limiting and control devices (9, 2 and 3), making an opening (6) in at least one of the two sides of the sleeve beyond the usable length of the cushion and over at least a portion of the width thereof, injecting air (7) through said opening to fill the cushion up to a desired level, making an airtight welded closure (5) downstream from said opening, and at least partially pre-cutting (8) the area around said opening to allow the finished cushion or the last cushion in a string to be separated easily. A machine for implementing said method is also described.
